Communications Manager – Axios Charlotte | Wbactive

Charlotte Pride, a leader in LGBTQ visibility in Charlotte and the Carolinas, is seeking a talented and thoughtful communications manager to join as an integral part of the leadership team with the goal of growing with the organization. The ideal candidate will bring a mix of communications and marketing experience, as well as experience in complex event/program management and LGBTQ community organization.

The communications manager will work closely with existing staff, board members and volunteers to learn all components of Charlotte Pride’s work, with a particular focus on managing the communications and marketing efforts of the organization’s events and programs. The role will report directly to the President of the Charlotte Pride Board of Directors and will work closely with board members, additional staff, volunteers and outside partners.

External communication:
• Write, edit and provide feedback for press releases, public statements and other external communications
• Act as the first point of contact for news media inquiries and help direct news media to the appropriate board, staff or volunteer
• Manage and develop a strategy to attract earned media with the goal of highlighting the organization’s programs, history and impact
• Manage the organization’s social media profiles and website, including creating a content calendar and all required content, including social media graphics and images, blog posts, and other updates
• Manage email newsletters, including content creation and list management
• Manage the organization’s mobile app, which is used as an event guide for the festival and parade each year
• Manage the production of Charlotte Pride Magazine each year, including creating and soliciting content from volunteers, community partners, community members or freelancers
• Manage the creation of content for communication with a variety of internal and external partners, sponsors, peer organizations and the general public, including printed and digital brochures, flyers, presentations, etc.
• Track and analyze communications data, including social media analytics and news media monitoring
Marketing and Fundraising:
• Developed and managed an annual marketing budget, marketing calendar and media partner relationships in coordination with the Board and employees, and prepared collateral for paid social advertising, other online marketing and ad placements in radio, television and print news media
• Manage the creation of promotional items including merchandise, event banners and signage
• Work closely with the board and staff to develop fundraising and communications goals and strategies
Event, program and volunteer management:
• Work closely with the board, staff and volunteers to manage and plan the organization’s events and programs, including the annual festival and parade
• Work closely with staff to recruit, manage and oversee a team of over two dozen volunteer leaders who help plan the organization’s events and programs
IT and digital management:
• Act as the first point of contact for managing and troubleshooting the organization’s digital assets and information technology

Our preferred candidate:
• dedicated to the service and advancement of the LGBTQ community
• Is thoughtful, purposeful, detail-oriented, considered, and collaborative
• Is able to balance complex projects, many of which overlap, ensuring deadlines are met and projects are successful
• Has at least one to two years in the management of large projects under his belt
• Has at least one to two years of communications and marketing experience, preferably in the nonprofit and LGBTQ sectors
• Is experienced and enjoys working with diverse, multicultural organizations
• Comfortable with a flexible schedule, with some evening and weekend work required

• Experience with the Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign, or other design tools such as Canva
• Experience with WordPress managing websites, including web hosting and domain management
• Familiarity with Mailchimp or other similar email newsletter tools
• Familiarity with social media management and analytics tools
• Comfort in learning new digital skills and tools as needed
• Familiarity with media relations, including knowledge of AP style, media monitoring services, and the ability to think and speak quickly, confidently, and authoritatively
• Proven experience and knowledge of organizing LGBTQ communities
• Preference may be given to people who are multilingual, especially those who are fluent in speaking and writing Spanish

Compensation for this role ranges from $45,000 to $50,000 depending on experience and includes a benefits package including a health stipend.
