NEW DELHI: A court in Delhi on Thursday extended police custody of Aftab Poonawala, accused in the Shraddha murder case, for the next five days.

A court in Delhi on Thursday evening extended the police detention of Aftab Poonawala, who is accused of killing his partner Shradha Walker.

The police submitted to the court to take the accused to Uttrakhand and Himachal Pradesh for examination. The court also granted the police request for approval of the defendant’s narco-analysis test.

Poonawala was brought before the court via video conference after police officers informed the court that the accused had been threatened by rogue and religious groups.

Poonawala’s five-day police detention ended on Thursday, prompting police to request an extension of the detention. The police reportedly told the court that some crucial evidence was still to be found, and Aftab would be detained for a further few days. According to the report, police have yet to locate the knife used by Poonawala and Shradha Walker’s mobile phone.

Lawyers present at the court protested the gruesome murder of Shraddha. The angry lawyers demanded the death penalty for Aftab Poonawala, who was arrested by police five days ago.

At around 4:00 p.m., a large number of lawyers gathered outside the courtroom in anticipation that the accused could be brought before the court. The lawyers shouted “hang Aftab”, “impose the death penalty” and announced the maximum sentence. The angry lawyers said the incident was very rare.

Poonawala, 28, is said to have strangled Shradha Walkar and sawed her body into 35 pieces, which he kept in a 300-litre refrigerator at his residence in South Delhi in Mehrauli for almost three weeks before taking her in several days after midnight dropped all over town .

Police said the couple had frequent arguments over financial issues and it is believed there was also a fight between them which resulted in Poonawala killing 27-year-old Walkar on the evening of May 18.
