Furnishing ideas for 2022

As the pandemic transformed the way we live, homeowners also invested heavily in modernizing their homes: around $420 billion in remodeling and repairs in 2020, according to Harvard University’s Joint Center for Housing Studies. The same team forecasts continued increases in maintenance and remodeling spending in 2022.

If you’re planning on renovating parts of your home this year, think not only about what you want, but also what others are looking for in a home so you have an opportunity to recoup some of the cost. Here are five home decor and design trends that will appeal to homeowners and buyers in 2022.

1. The greening of everything

To get a sense of what’s going on in homes, we started with what appears in online searches. According to an analysis by design website Houzz, everyone wants to make their home greener: online searches for green kitchen cabinets, green tiled bathrooms and green accent chairs increased by more than 700 percent in 2021.

It’s not just about adding the color green to your design, either. More and more of us are looking for artificial plants and trees, as well as indoor pots and planters, the Houzz report revealed.

2. Gray goes away

Green isn’t the only hue bringing homes to life in 2022. This year, more homeowners are forsaking “safe” color palettes in neutral tones for a bolder approach.

“Traditional grays are trending, and warmer, more inviting colors are making a comeback,” said Christy Walker, agent/owner of RE/MAX Signature in Phoenix, Arizona.

3. Sustainable materials will increase

As companies and countries seek solutions to address the climate crisis, individuals also want to play a part. A recent survey by Fixr.com shows that 90 percent of professionals in the construction and remodeling industry believe interest in eco-friendly home design and decor is growing. This means there will be an increased demand for materials like bamboo and those that contain recycled components – for example carpets and reclaimed wood.

4. Floor coverings are evolving

In 2022, home decor isn’t just about what your eyes see; It’s also about what’s under your feet.

“Floor styles are also changing, which sets the foundation for the look and feel,” says Walker. “New materials are allowing people to explore a more creative side with tile, stone and even a variety of high quality vinyls. Oversized block tiles are more on trend in the Southwest than traditional square or even plank options.”

5. Nature comes in

A focus on the outdoors defined 2020 and 2021, and that focus will not go away in 2022 either. A recent survey by the American Institute of Architects shows continued interest in building outdoor living spaces, with more homeowners asking about mixed indoor/outdoor living plans. like garage-style doors that open to the backyard.

If you’re freshening up your home this year and looking for home decor ideas, remember that you don’t have to budget heavily for a top-to-bottom makeover. As one realtor recommends, focus on identifying the design components and color schemes that can enhance your existing space.

“Design these days is about color, light, comfort, and having a private oasis,” says Catherine Allen, an agent at RE/MAX One in Woodland Hills, California. “Curb appeal is almost as important as what’s inside the house. Design and color that enhance and complement the space and the best attributes of the home without being fussy or overpowering let the highlighted areas sing and impress.”
