FAMILY FEATURES — Your home is a reflection of you and your decor should reflect your taste. With a few simple home upgrades, you can create the perfect space for you and your family, even as your design preferences change over time.
“Too often, when we design our ideal home, we only think about what we want others to see and enjoy when they visit,” said Jack Goldman, president and CEO of the Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association (HPBA). “The reality is that visitors make up less than 1 percent of your time at home.”
Consider these ideas to get started:
Add a fresh coat of paint
One of the easiest home improvement projects, a fresh coat of paint can transform the entire look of a room. Whether you’re painting the entire room a new color, opting for an accent wall in a vibrant hue, or just refreshing the paneling, color can go a long way in adding visual appeal and reflecting your personality. Patterned wallpaper, boards and battens, stone and tile can also be added for textured accents.
Bring warmth and atmosphere with a fireplace
“A fireplace is for you and your family, a personal addition that serves you and your household more than you might think,” Goldman said. “October is National Fireplace Month, a time to celebrate the warmth, comfort and ambiance that a fireplace or stove can bring to a home.”
According to HPBA, more than 3 in 5 homeowners have a fireplace or other fireplace product in their homes, and including a fireplace in your building or renovation plans is a gift of warmth, comfort and ambiance you can give yourself. Whether as the centerpiece of your living room or family room, or as an accent piece in your bedroom, bathroom or study, a fireplace can be an artful design element for your home and a safe, reliable source of warmth in unexpected weather.
The right lighting can bring rooms to life and make spaces appear larger and more inviting. There are many ways you can enhance your home, from strategically placing table and floor lamps that match your design style to replacing older ceiling and wall lights with more contemporary styles.
Give cabinets a fresh look
There are numerous easy ways to update your kitchen and bathroom cabinets to create a more current look. The easiest way is to swap out older cabinet handles and knobs for more modern options.
With a variety of finishes—stainless steel, bronze, brushed nickel, black, copper, and more—and styles available, you can customize your cabinets to match almost any design style in minutes.
Applying a coat of stain or paint is also a relatively quick and easy way to update some of the most-used rooms in your home without replacing cabinets entirely.
You can breathe new life into your current furniture with simple changes.
The easiest would be to simply rearrange your pieces and move some to other rooms for an updated look.
You can also add decorative covers to sofas, chairs, pillows and more, or take your upcycling a step further and give a bookcase, table or other wooden furniture a fresh coat of paint or stain, or give it a weathered look with some sandpaper.
