The size of the global automotive HUD market is expected to be reached $4.6 billion to 2028, increasing at a market growth of 30.7% CAGR during the forecast period.

An automotive head-up display (HUD) is a transparent surface in cars that displays brilliantly illuminated graphics and videos. These serve three main benefits and requirements. One is the ability to project information onto a driver, enhancing driver-vehicle interaction and increasing safety.

Another is to ensure that all relevant information is displayed accurately in a variety of environmental settings as people drive all day long. The third is to allow the driver to keep their attention on the road while seeing the necessary information they would normally expect to look away from the road to see. A HUD is an advanced tool that increases security.

This system can be integrated during production or added later. Automotive HUDs essentially consist of three components. The first component is an image generation unit (PGU) that prepares data for projection by processing it from multiple sources. The second component is a projector that generates and controls images. The projection surface is called the combiner (usually the windshield) and is the third part of a HUD system.

A series of mirrors and lenses within the PGU refract, reflect, focus and magnify the images for display. Since the device is mounted on the dashboard, the images are projected onto the windshield in a very small space. The projected image is raised to the correct eye level using an optical channel between two layers of treated laminated glass. This technology is not new and started with an image showing the actual speed of the car projected onto the lower part of the windshield in the driver’s field of view.

COVID-19 Impact Analysis

Vehicle sales were negatively impacted by plant closures around the world. The cancellation and delay of international specialist events have also had a significant negative impact on cash flow in the automotive head-up display (HUD) segment. A decline is expected for the automotive industry due to the lack of interest on the part of OEMs in investing in new technologies over the next one to two years. Production has been modified by manufacturers to avoid shortages and plan production according to OEM and Tier I manufacturers’ demand.

market growth factors

Increasing safety concerns for passengers, vehicles and passers-by

The primary concern of consumers of vehicles is the safety of both the passengers and the vehicles. The goal of the regulatory authorities worldwide is to increase safety in the automobile. According to the Global Status Report on Road Safety, there are more than a million road deaths worldwide every year. According to studies, road fatalities will become the sixth leading cause of death worldwide in the coming years. According to the National Center for Statistics and Analysis (NCSA), more than 1,000 people are injured every day in crashes reportedly involving a distracted driver in the United States.

Introducing affordable wearable huds in economy vehicles

The automotive business continues to develop due to technological breakthroughs. In certain small cars, features such as surround view cameras and driver assistance systems that were previously only available in luxury cars are standard. The same phenomenon gradually occurs with head-up displays (HUD). For example, the 10-inch HUD in the 2018 Toyota Camry is one of the largest and best HUDs ever installed in a vehicle. Another well-known manufacturer with HUDs in some of their vehicles is Mazda.

Market Inhibiting Factors

Need for more space in cockpit for installing hud

The HUD projected on the windshield takes up a lot of space in the cockpit of an automobile. Advanced HUDs such as augmented reality head-up displays (AR-HUD) help make driving more comfortable and safer by overlaying virtual information for the driver on the outside view of the traffic situation in front of the car. The reflected information appears to be part of the actual driving situation. However, augmented reality HUDs use a significant amount of dashboard space.
